The mission of the Spanish Program at The University of Alabama is to assist students in achieving proficiency in the Spanish language and to lead them to an understanding and appreciation of the wide range of Hispanic cultures. To meet this goal, the Spanish Program offers introductory, advanced, and graduate-level (Masters and Ph.D.) instruction in language, linguistics, culture and civilization, literature, and area studies.

With professors with advanced degrees from top-rated institutions—Brown University, Indiana University, Ohio State University, Columbia University, and University of Pittsburgh—the Spanish Program at The University of Alabama offers high quality education and a wide-ranch of learning opportunities from our highly-regarded Alabama in Spain Summer Abroad Program in Alcalá de Henares to our new “Spanish Outreach Program” in the Tuscaloosa/Northport area, to our semester and year abroad programs in Spain.

Spanish, with approximately 350 MILLION speakers, is the fourth most spoken language on the planet and the United States is now officially the fifth largest Spanish-speaking country in the world! According to 1999 Census statistics, Spanish is spoken by approximately 12% of the total population of the United States (nearly 32,000,000).
